Radio Bonita
New York, NY
Founded 2020
Radio Bonita carries forward the spirit of pirate radio and DIY audio labs, serving as a vibrant hub for music and politics on the Lower East Side. Rooted in a tradition of unfiltered, eclectic broadcasting, Radio Bonita offers an array of legendary DJ sets and insightful radio interviews featuring underground literati and New York’s most innovative artists. As a dynamic platform for both emerging and established voices, Radio Bonita stands as the go-to source for cutting-edge sounds and thought-provoking discourse, embodying the raw energy and creative pulse of its local community.
I founded Radio Bonita as a part of my participation in Performance Space New York’s Artist Residency in 2020 with my collective Brujas. I created the name and branding based on a coming together of two groups–Brujas and Pretty Records. I carry this brand identity through the fliers which feature the classic Radio Bonita fruit stickers as overlays and sticker merch. I also designed and coded the website from scratch, and learned all relating to internet radio and streaming which became very necessary when the COVID pandemic hit in 2020. This project highlights my creative and holistic approach to graphic design, as well as my ability to adapt and learn new skills as new solutions are required.
Branding Identity
As a combination of my collective Brujas and my record label Pretty Records, I landed on the name Radio Bonita. Upon seeing a truck bearing the Bonita logo, I was inspired to base the branding on fruit labels, highlighting the parallels between the exploitation of the fruit trade and the cultural exploitation of artists in NYC.
Web Design
I designed and coded the Radio Bonita website from scratch, which primarily features our live stream when the radio is being broadcast, show archive, and web store.
